Beyond SHAPING EU SPORT Discussions in Larnaka, Cyprus
Larnaka - Nicosia, Cyprus | 15 November 2024 – The "Shaping EU Sport" project continues to build on past efforts in European sport policy, highlighting the evolution of sport governance since the inclusion of sport in the EU agenda under Article 165 of the Lisbon Treaty. Cyprus plays a key role in this initiative, contributing to the follow-up of previous developments and preparing for the integration of project results into the upcoming Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2026.
The project introduces an innovative approach by presenting sport policies through the perspectives of Chairs of the Council Working Party on Sport, making EU policy developments more accessible to a wider audience. For the first time, an interactive website and a dedicated booklet will document key EU sport policy decisions, complemented by expert insights, testimonials, and recommendations.
Cyprus' involvement ensures strong complementarity with past and ongoing initiatives in the sport sector. The Cyprus Sport Organisation, as a key partner, will present the project's findings to European sport directors during the 2026 Cyprus Presidency. This will provide an opportunity to discuss the long-term impact of EU sport policies and explore new avenues for cross-border cooperation.
The project's transnational dimension has been reinforced by active engagement in sporting events, including participation in the Larnaka Marathon, showcasing the project's commitment to promoting sport as a driver of European cooperation. Through such activities, the project emphasizes the role of sport in fostering inclusion, integrity, and governance improvements across Europe.
With meetings and events taking place across the continent, including Brussels and other participating countries, the final transnational meeting in October 2025 will serve as a platform for presenting the project's conclusions and engaging EU policymakers in discussions on the future of sport governance.
Communication and Dissemination Activities with EU Funding Visibility
At the event in Estonia, the project aims, outcomes, and key conclusions were presented, with references to European values and EU sport policies. The visibility of European Union funding was ensured in full compliance with Erasmus+ requirements. The Erasmus+ logo and the official funding acknowledgement were clearly displayed across all communication and dissemination channels related to the event.
Furthermore, promotional kits and materials were prepared and used consistently throughout all communication and dissemination activities. These included flyers, T-shirts, roll-ups, bandanas, leaflets, and handbooks, all bearing the Erasmus+ logo and funding acknowledgement. The materials were distributed at relevant sport events, meetings, schools, and public gatherings.
Beyond the project's lifetime, its outcomes—particularly the interactive website—will continue to serve as a resource for EU Member States and beyond, fostering sustainable cooperation and the exchange of best practices. The project's influence is expected to extend across borders, strengthening ties between EU countries and neighbouring regions through shared sporting initiatives.
